The Role of Expanded PTFE Membrane for Garment Membranes

The Structure of Expanded PTFE Membrane Determines Its Function and Application

Expanded PTFE membrane is a very common raw material. It is a basic performance material with many types and excellent functions, and thus has very rich and extensive applications.

Its structure is smaller than water molecules and larger than water vapor molecules, which gives it waterproof, moisture-permeable, and breathable functions. After being combined with other fabrics, it can be used in sportswear such as mountaineering suits, windbreakers, ski suits, and warm clothing.

Expanded PTFE membrane is a microporous membrane made from PTFE resin through a special biaxial stretching process. It has characteristics such as waterproof, moisture-permeable, windproof, and warm-keeping. It is widely used in special clothing such as cold-proof clothing, sportswear, firefighting, military, police, medical, biochemical protective clothing, as well as shoes, hats, gloves, sleeping bags, and tents.

Expanded PTFE membrane has a porosity of up to 80%-90%, and after high-temperature heat-setting treatment, the microporous structure is stable, which can effectively block dust particles. Moreover, its pore size is small and uniform, and with surface filtration mechanism, it easily removes dust. Its strong hydrophobicity and low surface energy provide good non-adhesive capability, effectively removing accumulated surface dust. Performance can be restored through washing or backflushing, greatly extending its service life.

Functions of Expanded PTFE Membrane for Garment Membrane

Expanded PTFE membrane is used in the clothing industry provides special clothing that has completely different effects from general clothing. Garments made from this material have waterproof but breathable functions. Since the body emits water vapor, it can release sweat (in liquid form). People wearing such clothing can walk in the rain and it is highly effective for firefighting clothing.

Waterproof and breathable PTFE garment membrane

The microporous expanded PTFE membrane surface resembles a spider-web structure. The cross-sectional micropores of the membrane are larger than the surface micropores. The cross-section is a network structure with very complex changes in the three-dimensional structure of the pores, possibly forming channels composed of multiple micropores, or connecting one micropore to multiple channels.

PTFE garment membranes are produced by the biaxial stretching method have characteristics such as waterproof, moisture-permeable, windproof, and warm-keeping. Combined with other fabrics, they become a widely used clothing material.

Cold-proof PTFE garment membrane

PTFE garment membranes are used in sports and leisure clothing, firefighting, police, medical protective clothing, outdoor sportswear, shoe materials, hats, gloves, sleeping bags, and tent materials. The clothing materials combined with expanded PTFE membranes are widely used in sportswear, cold-proof clothing, military, medical special clothing, shoes, hats, gloves, sleeping bags, tents, fire protection, and police applications.
